Your outdated digicam may give video calls an improve.
Previous digital cameras are making a bizarre comeback, so it might really feel a bit harder to justify throwing one within the electronics recycling bin than it will have just a few years in the past. Based on the Digital camera & Imaging Merchandise Affiliation, shipments of built-in-lens digital cameras grew 29.6 p.c in 2025 to roughly 2.44 million items, and are projected to extend a further 13.6 p.c in 2026. (CIPA did not attribute that development particularly to the present development of retro digicams.)
If you have already got one mendacity round, nonetheless, there’s one more reason to maintain it. There are quite a lot of older DSLRs, mirrorless cameras and even some compact cameras that can be utilized as webcams. That may translate to improved low-light efficiency, larger management over framing or the pure background blur that laptop computer webcams dedicate quite a lot of software program to making an attempt to duplicate. The trick is discovering out whether or not yours can do it with out turning a free improve into an costly facet undertaking.
See if it really works over USB first
Begin with the precise mannequin quantity and the producer’s webcam compatibility checklist. Canon’s EOS 6D and EOS Insurgent T6 are nonetheless supported, as are Nikon’s D5300 and D750 with its Webcam Utility and Sony’s A5100, A7 II and RX100 IV with Imaging Edge Webcam.
In case your digicam is listed, then setup might be moderately easy. Set up the producer’s webcam software program if required, join the digicam utilizing a USB information cable, put it into the suitable video or distant mode and choose it because the digicam in Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Groups. You may have already got the whole lot you want.
Nevertheless, a bigger digicam doesn’t essentially end in a clearer webcam image. Some older supported Nikon DSLRs use solely the VGA portion of Nikon’s XGA live-view show, so a more recent devoted webcam may have the ability to seize extra element. Relying on the digicam mannequin, the digicam can compensate for a few of this floor with a bigger sensor, higher low-light efficiency and management over the lens.
Audio and energy ought to be checked as properly. Nikon and Sony say their webcam utilities do not ship the digicam’s microphone audio to the pc, which suggests utilizing your laptop computer mic or a separate microphone. For those who’re utilizing dwell view for a protracted assembly, it’s going to additionally drain the battery, so if the digicam permits, exterior energy is perhaps value establishing.
HDMI can work, however verify the fee first
The experiment would not should cease if there is no such thing as a assist for USB webcam. Cameras with clear HDMI output might be linked via a seize gadget, which then reveals up as a webcam in your pc. “Clear” is the essential phrase right here. Nobody desires autofocus containers, publicity settings and a flashing battery icon on the weekly Groups name.
Steady operation issues as properly. Elgato suggests checking if energy saving might be turned off and if the digicam might be powered externally whereas transmitting video. There are some older cameras that weren’t meant for use as desk equipment for hours.
The difficulty is value. Elgato’s Cam Hyperlink 4K is priced at $99.99, excluding an HDMI cable, mount and/or presumably a dummy battery. Our present webcam information, alternatively, covers the 2K Anker PowerConf C200 at $60, which comes with microphones and a a lot easier USB setup. Mac customers may also have the ability to use a appropriate iPhone, whereas Home windows 11 customers can use a appropriate Android cellphone as a webcam without cost.
Additionally take into account the resale worth of the digicam earlier than shopping for equipment. A number of the older digicams have been offered for far more than homeowners would count on due to the curiosity in them. Based on B&H, one among its writers bought a Canon PowerShot S95 for $130 in 2023, and it was promoting for a median of over $400 in 2026.
